Volunteer Program

Volunteers are the heart of SSO and play a vital role in carrying out the mission and mandate of the organization. Volunteers donate their time, energy and skills to support our programs, assist the families that need our help and organize our events. Your valuable contribution of time will allow us to sustain our existing services and programs and to increase and expand the assistance we provide.  


We are looking for volunteers to assist with the following roles:

Administrative/Office Support: (where regional offices are located): Assistance required in writing letters, creating spread sheets, power point presentations, photocopying, filing and various administrative functions.

Awareness: In this role volunteers will assist SSO in raising awareness about programs and services as well as about schizophrenia and psychosis.

Communications/marketing support: Assistance required in helping to plan strategic social media plans for various events.

Designated representatives: In this role, volunteers will be designated representatives for SSO staff at events and meetings.

Family Education Facilitators: SSO support groups are peer-facilitated and provides an opportunity for families and individuals impacted by schizophrenia or psychosis to come together to learn and offer mutual support. In this role volunteers will be trained to lead a four week education course that will involve providing emotional and social support to participants.  

Immigration council: In this role, volunteers who are knowledgeable about Immigration Review Board procedures will assist SSO staff in preparing for immigration reviews and hearings.

Intake: As the initial point of contact for clients, volunteer intake workers will welcome clients, conduct a basic assessment of need, respond to general inquiries and link clients to appropriate internal and external resources. The intake worker will be trained and receive on-going support by SSO’s team of frontline counselors.

Local Volunteer Committees: LVCs are board approved volunteer groups that work in partnership with SSO staff to extend the programs and services of the organization in local communities across the province. LVC members will work together to raise the profile of mental illness and SSO through a variety of community engagement activities and initiatives.

Policy, legislation and advocacy: In this role, volunteers will assist the Manager of Policy and Community Relations with drafting policy documents, conducting research and reading policy papers.

Research: SSO’s research department is seeking volunteers with a strong sense of commitment and an openness to learn to acquire hands-on experience in a variety of research based initiatives. 

Research volunteers would be engaged in:
  • Conducting literature reviews, background research and developing succinct summaries/analyses.
  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Data entry and data management.
  • Knowledge translation activities.
  • Report writing.
Speakers Bureau: Members of SSO’s Speaker’s Bureau speak to groups of people about their experiences living with or caring for someone with schizophrenia or psychosis. Find out more here.

Special Events:  Special events volunteers will work alongside the events coordinator to:
  • Plan and execute events.
  • Cultivate and secure event sponsorship.
  • Implement SSO’s third party fundraising program.
  • Provide support and assistance to fundraising initiatives in regions across the province.
Special Projects: Assistance required in working on special projects for development which will include research on corporations, environmental scans, cost benefit analysis.

Walk of Hope Coordinator in regions across Ontario: The walk of hope coordinator in different regions across Ontario will assist with planning and organizing the annual Walk of Hope with SSO’s event coordinator.

Youth Engagement: In this role volunteers will assist SSO’s program director with the day to day activities involved with the youth program.
