SSO Preparing First-Ever Report on Schizophrenia & Psychosis; Input Needed

The goal of this report is to provide a baseline for measuring how well the current mental health and addictions system meets the needs of individuals and families impacted by schizophrenia and psychotic illnesses and the impact the system has on quality of life. Input from individuals living with schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses as well as from caregivers will serve as the foundation for our report. We have developed brief, anonymous, surveys to help us gather this information. To complete the survey for individuals living with the schizophrenia or psychosis please click here, to complete the survey for caregivers please click here.

The SSO Responds to Bill C-54

The Government of Canada has tabled a Bill (C-54) proposing changes to the Not Criminally Responsible on account of Mental Disorder (NCR) provisions of the Criminal Code.  Given the significance of passing such changes, Canada's mental health community, including the SSO and all other Schizophrenia Societies across the country, has come together to form a working Alliance in an effort to strengthen our voice on this critical matter.

The Alliance is working with the government to ensure that changes to the NCR provision will take into account the need to protect the public from dangerous persons, while addressing the therapeutic needs of individuals with mental illnesses so as to mitigate risk and promote recovery. Canadians need a working mental health system and not an out-dated approach.  For more information on the SSO and the Alliance please

Meeting of the Minds: EPI Information Event for Spanish Speakers on March 27

While mental illness strikes in every community research shows that certain groups may experience elevated risks and poorer access to treatment. This event brings together members of the Hispanic community in Toronto with mental health service
providers to share information about early psychosis intervention. Attendance will help families and service providers learn more about early psychosis intervention education.  The event takes place on Wednesday, March 27 from 6 - 8:30 pm at the North York Civic Centre, 5100 Yonge Street (North York Centre subway station). Please RSVP by March 22 via 416-449-6830 x 249 or
