The SSO Starts an E-newsletter

The Schizophrenia Society of Ontario is proud to announce the creation of its new e-newsletter.  Distributed on a monthly basis, the e-newsletter is an easy way to stay up to date on SSO events, programs, services and more.

 

 

Volunteer Recognition Event Hosted by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor

On Monday, September 24, the SSO's volunteers were honoured at a reception held by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable David O. Onley, in his Suite at Queen's Park.  Click here to see more photos from the event.  

 

 

SSO Cited as a Resource in CMAJ Article

The SSO's ER wait times paper was cited in an article on ER wait times published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).

The CMAJ showcases innovative research and ideas aimed at improving health for people in Canada and globally. It publishes original clinical research, analyses and reviews, news, practice updates and thought-provoking editorials. CMAJ's impact factor is 8.2 and the website receives over 2 million unique visitors a year.

The article has since been
discussed on CBC Radio.

 

 

Policy & Advocacy Update
SSO's Policy & Advocacy Department has been busy.  Here are some highlights of recent activity:
-    Became new co-chair of the
Ontario Mental Health Police Record Check Coalition
-    Continuing to work with provincial and federal governments to ensure that the needs of persons affected by schizophrenia and psychosis are acknowledged and addressed in all public policy developments and initiatives
-    Continuing to work with the
ODSP Action Coalition, Ontario Caregiver Coalition, Toronto Police Services Board and Ontario Mental Health and Addictions Alliance.

 

Research Updates

The SSO's research department is working on two major projects currently: A research project to explore supportive spaces and communities for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) persons who have lived experience of schizophrenia/psychosis; A project investigating mental illness stigma among racialized youth, family members, and community peers.  Click here to learn more about these projects.  

 

Successful Building Capacity Workshops

The SSO is proud to wrap up its fall season of providing capacity building workshops in family-centred care in Peterborough and Halton. Several of the sessions were sold out and all were highly evaluated. More Building Capacity workshops will be availablele in the spring, visit SSO's website to register!

 

Holiday Season Appeal

At this time of year, please remember those who are impacted by mental illnesses. There are many individuals and families in Ontario that the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario is helping and supporting today, but there are many more we have not yet reached.  We need your help to provide this vital support. SSO Holiday Hours

The Schizophrenia Society of Ontario's offices will be closed for the holiday season from December 24 - January 1. However, our Ask the Expert email and telephone helpline will be open during office hours on the following dates: December 24, 27, 28 and 31.
